Lynn's Story
I was in the restroom, washing my hands at school, when all of the sudden I started babbling. That kinda freaked me out, so I asked the library assistant to follow me back to my room. That was May 5, 2005.
That’s how it all started. From there to driving home and being stopped at a red light not being able to figure out how to put my car into gear; arriving at home and not being able to speak, but could hear everything; and just before my boyfriend called 911, feeling myself go into a grand mal seizure….oh, it was lots-o-fun, let me tell ya!.
Once at the hospital I was told I had a racquet-ball size brain tumor, which was later defined as an Anaplastic Oligodendroglioma, grade 3. I had brain cancer. Actually, I was okay with that, really. Being very spiritual and having lots of faith, I knew in my heart I was not going to die. After all, I wanted to live.
I was going to fight this nemesis by going through all the blood tests, MRIs, chemo treatments (which are in pill form since that is the only way to get through the blood barrier in the brain) and radiation (which due to the size of my tumor, killed all my hair follicles on the top of my head). I was not very happy at first….I mean I am a Leo – where’s my mane for crying out loud!!! But I have a wonderful REAL hair – hair piece! This prevents my students from freaking out if they saw me hairless: D. It was a long, tough road….but I made it!!!
I consider myself a miracle! The Big Guy above gave me another chance at life. I am spending it being the best 4th grade teacher I can be, giving my students life lessons along the way. I am extremely grateful just to be alive and able to wear this Survivor shirt!
